Everything You Need to Know About Going on a Yoga Retreat

Writer: ahdymentahdyment

With my yoga retreat to Costa Rica just a few weeks away, I've been thinking non-stop about why I want to host retreats, why people sign up for them, and what people need to know about retreats. Going on a yoga retreat can be one of the best decisions for your mind, body, and soul. I've hosted two retreats in my career as a yoga teacher, one in Tuscany and one in Muskoka and to this day they stand out as the most powerful, beautiful, and connected human experiences IN MY LIFE. Imagine finding yourself in a serene location, surrounded by nature, where the only thing that matters is your well-being. The transformative power of yoga retreats is remarkable, and in this post, I’ll share why you should consider going on one, what happens during a retreat, and the incredible benefits of an international yoga retreat.

Why Go on a Yoga Retreat?

Everyone needs a break from the mundane nature of daily life, and a yoga retreat offers that perfect opportunity for a shift not only in physical location but also in perspective. Stepping away from screens and distractions and routines allows you to connect deeply with yourself and remember how big the world is.

Yoga retreats often take place in stunning locations, such as the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, known for its biodiversity, or beside the clear beaches of Thailand, where you can experience temperatures averaging around 30°C year-round. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves or the call of tropical birds while filling your lungs with fresh, unpolluted air.

A yoga retreat provides more than just a peaceful environment. It immerses you in yoga practice, enabling daily focus on your physical and mental health. You will be surrounded by like-minded individuals who are all on their paths of self-discovery and well-being.

If you seek a deeper understanding of yoga, a retreat allows for extended practice and learning from experienced instructors, which can enhance your skills immeasurably compared to typical classes. For instance, many participants report improving their asanas by 30 to 40% after just one week at a retreat.

What Happens on a Yoga Retreat?

What can you expect when you sign up for a yoga retreat? Here’s a glimpse of a typical schedule:

Your days may start early with sunrise yoga classes, allowing your body to awaken gently through stretching while your surroundings remain quiet. Following these classes, you engage in workshops on mindfulness, breathwork, or even yoga philosophy. These workshops can offer significant insights; for example, participants might discover how to incorporate breathwork principles into daily life.

Meals are a highlight of yoga retreats, often featuring wholesome, organic foods designed to nourish the body. Think fresh fruits, vibrant salads, and traditional local dishes. At my Tuscant retreat, we included cooking classes to learn about the art of making pasta (and pairing wine!).

Besides yoga practice, you’ll have opportunities for excursions, whether hiking through breathtaking landscapes, visiting bustling local markets, or enjoying the serene beauty of your surroundings. These activities encourage not only personal exploration but also camaraderie with fellow participants.

Evenings are often reserved for relaxation, group discussions, or mindfulness practices, creating a nurturing environment where everyone can share experiences and insights. Many participants bring home a sense of community that is hard to find in everyday life.

On my upcoming retreat, our daily schedule looks like this:

7-9am: Morning breathwork and cold plunge

9-10am: Nourishing local homemade breakfast

10-12pm: Yoga or Pilates practice

12-1pm: Lunch

1-3pm: Quiet time, siesta

3-5pm: Optional group activity, reiki, posture assessment, art, music, massage etc

6-8pm: Dinner and conversation

8-9pm: Restorative or yin yoga practice

9pm: Calm down time

What Are the Benefits of an International Yoga Retreat?

When considering an international yoga retreat, the benefits go far beyond yoga practice. Traveling to a new destination significantly enhances your overall experience.

Immersing yourself in a new culture can offer fresh perspectives. Each location presents its own unique practices and flavors. Imagine a yoga retreat in Costa Rica, where you may learn about the uses of local plants and herbs or participate in traditional ceremonies that have been practiced for generations.

Additionally, a change in environment rejuvenates your mental and emotional state. Surrounded by natural beauty, many find that worries and stress dissipate more easily. One study found that spending time in nature can reduce stress levels by up to 30%.

Finally, yoga retreats often provide an opportunity to escape unhealthy habits - like a detox. This time away from your routine can help you reset and develop a sustainable wellness lifestyle, something participants consistently rave about once they return home.
